Variations of Baccarat

Baccarat, as a simple card game, has many variations around the world. The most popular baccarat variations however, are chemin de fer, baccarat en banque, punto banco, and European baccarat. mini baccarat is commonly played in Las Vegas casinos, but is not entirely a variation of baccarat.

In Baccarat, the highest possible score is nine; if a player gets a score of ten it is equal to zero. If for instance you have two cards, a seven and a nine, you do not have a score of sixteen (as the sum of the two cards), but a six (if ten is equal to zero, and you minus the ten from sixteen, you get a six). An ace is counted as one, and the picture cards are considered zero. The cards with numbers retain their value.

Baccarat chemin de fer is played in European casinos, particularly French casinos. Baccarat en banque can also be found in European casinos. The difference of baccarat chemin de fer and baccarat en banque is that in chemin de fer, the casino does not play the role of banker. The bank rotates among the players, unlike in baccarat en banque in which the house/casino is the banker.

In chemin de fer, if a player does not want to be the banker, he can reject it. Baccarat chemin de fer is also called railroad, because "chemin de fer" is French for railroad. This is because the role of player moves like a train--in counterclockwise. Another difference between these two baccarat variations is the number of players. Baccarat en banque can be played by only one player, while chemin de fer has to be played by at least two players.

The object of the punto banco is to bet on the hand with the highest total. In punto banco, the player calls out "banco" when a player wants to cover the entire bet of the banker. American baccarat (this includes punto banco because it is also known as North American baccarat) and European baccarat has two differences: the player has the option of drawing on five, and the banker has the option whether to draw a card.

Mini baccarat, on the other hand, is played exactly like punto banco. The main difference is that the mini baccarat is played at a smaller table, like a blackjack table. A dealer handles the game (the dealer is the bank), and the game is faster than the usual baccarat. It is open to more gamblers because of its lower betting limits.
